2024 LECTURE SEIRES

SANT KHALSA AND DEBBIE BENTLEY

Sunday, October 13th, 6:00 pm PDT
Bayfront Theater (BATS Improv) at Fort Mason

Come together for a thoughtful evening featuring artists Sant Khalsa and Debbie Bentley in Women in the Desert, a talk delving into the profound relationships between these women, nature, and the arid landscapes they live in.

Sant Khalsa, a pioneering artist and activist, and Denver-based photographer Debbie Bentley both use their work to explore environmental and cultural issues. Khalsa, known for her mindful investigations of place, will reflect on the desert as a metaphor for resilience, drawing from her career of nearly five decades and her book Crystal Clear || Western Waters. Bentley, recognized for projects like Salton Sea: Beautiful Desolation, will discuss her latest work, Dammed: Birth to Death of the Colorado River, which examines the environmental impact of the river’s transformation and the need to preserve fragile desert landscapes.

2024 Fall Lecture Series is presented in partnership with Mark Ryan Fine Art Services who has provided meticuloulsy hand crafting and finishing frame packages in Oakland, CA since 2014.

OPEN CALL

METAPHORS OF RECENT TIMES | A DIALOGUE OF THE PERSONAL, THE POLITICAL AND THE CULTURAL

Presented by PhotoAlliance in partnership with San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries
Deadline: Saturday, November 2, 2024

We invite photo-based artists whose work raises awareness and provokes dialogue, using the common ground of image as a tool for reflecting, sharing, and learning. We encourage submissions that are not just a historical view but a portrayal of our times seen through individual lives. This exhibition will feature a multitude of incisive visual perspectives based on diverse identities and backgrounds.

This exhibition will ask the artists to review the INSIGHT/INCITE 20/20 portfolio and submit a trio of 3 images for consideration, relating to each other and to the high level theme(s) of the portfolio. Submission to this call is free of charge through the generosity of the San Francisco Arts Commission.
